Shoulder Replacement / Open Surgery - Joint Replacement

Our Shoulder is made up of three bones which are Humerus (upper arm bone), Scapula (Shoulder blade) and Clavicle (The Collar bone). The whole structure is like a ball and socket joint. A thin, smooth tissue called synovial membrane covers all remaining surfaces inside the shoulder joint.

Shoulder Replacement or Total Shoulder Arthoplasty is a procedure which is done when a patient will be having the end stage of arthritis or degenerative joint problems in the shoulder joint. A cartilage is present in the shoulder which allows smooth movement but any problems happening to it will causes worst pain in the joints.

CAUSES:

The main causes of shoulder replacement are,
1. Osteoarthritis.  
2. Rheumauatoid Arthritis. 
 3. Post-Traumatic Arthritis. 
 4. Rotator Cuff Tear Arthopathy.

 DIAGNOSIS:

The diagnosis which is done before the replacement surgery is,

     1.    CT scans.
     2.   Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
     3.    X-rays.
     4.    Anti-Inflammatory Medications


TREATMENT PROCEDURE:

The procedure will be carried out under anesthesia and the time taken will be 2-3 hours. The damaged part will be replaced with the help of a artificial stem which will be functioning as same of the removed one. The artificial stem will be like a round head. After replacing the damaged bone, medical cement will be induced to keep it on the particular part.

POST-PROCEDURE:


1. Physical Therapy will be given.
2. Daily Exercises.
3.   Medications.
4.   2-3 days of hospitalization.
